Reading continued an impressive start to life in the First Division when they claimed a hard earned point from Ronnie Moore's improving Rotherham side.
Rotherham provided a high energy start and should have led at half time, but they failed to break Reading's stubborn ressistance and were almost caught out on the break by Alan Pardew's side.
Reading came within a whisker of leading in the first half, but Nicky Forster's snapshot grazed the bar and went over.
And when the visitors turned in a better show after the break ex-Rotherham midfielder kevin Watson blazed wide of an open net.
Rotherham might have snatched the winner late on when striker Mark Robins came off the subs bench but hit his shot straight at the keeper and hoisted the follow up effort over the top.
Afterwards Rotherham manager Moore said: "I can't believe how the game ended goalless, there were so many chances.
"I was very disappointed that we didn't win beacuse we certainly created the better chances and as far as I'm concerned it was two points lost for us.
"They are a good side and there is no shame in drawing with them. I just felt we lacked the killer touch at the front even though we defended very well."
Reading manager Alan Pardew agreed: "Im amazed it ended 0-0 when there were so many chances.
"I was disappointed with our first-half performance, it was the worst we have played this season but I thought we played better in the second half.
"We had chances to win it, but then Rotherham had their own chances so I suppose in the end a draw was a fair result.
"I can see how they have progressed since we last played them and that is the sort of progression we want to make."
