Speculation had suggested that the Saints were to make a pre-deadline day swoop for Royals striker Jamie Cureton.

Southampton boss Gordon Strachan has been at the Madejski Stadium several times in the last month, with the South Coast side short of a striker there had been suggestions that Cureton was on Strachan's wish list.

According to the St Mary's based side's chairman Rupert Lowe there is no move for Curo in the offing.

"Presumably the Cureton rumour has come about because Gordon went to watch Reading's game on Tuesday night but there is nothing in it.," explained the Saints chairman.

He added: "We may try and get someone else in before the transfer window closes and we are looking at a couple of possibilities but Cureton is not one of those players."

Meanwhile, Reading Chief Executive Nigel Howe also denied the rumour.

"Gordon Strachan has been to the Madejsi Stadium several times but we don't believe that he is watching Jamie Cureton. There has certainly been no approach for him," said Howe to readingfc.co.uk.

Cureton's contract is up in the summer so the possibility that he could walk away from the Royals for nothing in the summer is very real - especially considering Alan Pardew's apparent dislike for him.

But, Howe is not concerned, content with knowing that negotiations will begin sometime in the future. He added: "I have regular converstaions with Jamie's agent and we're both happy with the agreement that we'll talk in the future."
