Why Did We Sign Owusu When Whelan & Armstrong Were Available?

Last night news filtered through that the Royals were set to bring in a player on loan. Hurrah! We all thought, we're finally going to have a decent partner for Nicky Forster.

With the clock seemingly getting further from the big announcement , rather than closer to it, supporters were happy to speculate as to who the new guy would be.

"Zamora," said one. "Barry Hayles," proclaimed another. "I think it's Matt Jansen," added a third.

But when the news finally arrived a stunned disbelief settled. "Lloyd Owusu?" Yep, thats right folks a former Slough Town player. Hardly the big name all goalscoring forward that we were hoping for.

However, the problem is there is simply no one better available at the moment. NOT. Following the news that Wednesday have let their mis-firing forward Owusu go to Reading for a month a grinning Chris Turner revealed he is hoping to replace his hapless striker with either Ipswich's Alun Armstrong, Millwall's Noel Whelan or a mystery third striker he would not name.

So who's got the better deal? Well to be honest neither Armstrong or Whelan have been setting Division One alight this season (six goals between them). But then neither have been playing regular first team football.

For the record, Owusu has been playing relatively regular first team football this year (seventeen starts, nine appearances as a sub - 1539 minutes of first team football in total). Yet, having played far more football this season than Whelan (846 mins) and Armstrong (383 mins) put together, he has managed a meagre six goals in a lower league.

Armstrong in particular looks like he would have proved to be a good player to bring in. So why-o-why did we have to sign Lloyd 'one good season at Brentford and that's your lot' Owusu?

Well, Steve Coppell is a top manager so must know what he is doing (even if recent displays suggest otherwise). Furthermore, the former Brentford boss likes to link-up with the same players at every club he manages, the fact that he brought Ivar Ingimarsson to Reading having previously had him in his squad at Brighton and Brentford is testament to this.

On paper there are better players out there on the market that Reading Football Club could have afforded so Reading Mad cannot understand why we signed Owusu. That said, we hope Coppell proves us wrong and the big frontman, who so nearly wrecked out chances or promotion to Division One two years ago, helps point the team back in the direction of the Play-Offs.
