Want-away goalkeeper Phil Whitehead may be back in Reading shortly after a disastourous couple of games with Prenton Park based Tranmere Rovers.

In the past Alan Pardew has made no secret of his desire to offload Whitehead who was unhappy at being dropped when the Royals signed Marcus Hahnemann in the summer.

However, it seems there may be a reprieve available for Whitehead who would apparently be happy to come back and fight for his place.

The former Halifax goalkeeper recently let in twelve goals in a week prompting Rovers boss Ray Mathias to drop him.

"Things haven't gone well for Whitehead at Tranmere. They've had two awful results and Phil has conceded two sixes. I've looked at the goals and I don't think he had a chance of stopping any of them," admitted Pardew, speaking to BBC Radio Berkshire.

"He has now been left out of the side which he isn't very happy about and neither am I to be honest. It's a major disappointment because we sent Phil there to get his confidence back and it hasn't worked out.

"I may have to review the situation. If he does come back to Reading then he'll work hard to try to get back into the team.

"We've got three very good goalkeepers at this club and Jamie Young coming through from the academy so we're very strong in that position."

Meanwhile, Jamie Ashdown may be back in-between the sticks for tomorrow's game againt Ipswich.

The 21-year-old impressed in the 3-0 win at Grimsby two weeks ago and may keep his place in the side as Marcus Hahnemnn is struggling with a calf injury.
