Why should Mr Mad be so excited? The Royals yesterday signed Bermudan forward Shaun Goater for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £500,000. The Royals chairman believes it is the biggest signing that the club has ever made.
There have been mutterings coming from the inner sanctums of the club all summer that this year the club can earn promotion to the Premiership, and maybe now those outside will begin to believe the dream.
Addressing the press yesterday (Friday) a relaxed Madejski said: "I believe this is the biggest signing in Reading FC's history - it sends out a message to the rest of the football world that we are serious and that we mean business.
"Shaun has scored more than 200 goals in senior football and now I hope his goals help take us into the Premiership."
As Reading continue to successfully navigate their way up the steep slope to success, crowds have grown in tandem. But Madejski believes that signing a quality player in Shaun Goater gives the Royals a major foothold as they make their way up to the financial and footballing peaks.
"He fits in well with the structure here and I'm sure the fans will appreciate that. I'm also sure it will boost season ticket sales as we are determined to make this club a big club," added Mr Madejski.
"We have the infrastructure to make that happen and in Shaun we have a talented footballer with a proven track record."
Thirty-three-year-old Goater was unveiled to Reading supporters before last night's friendly against Southampton. The Bermudan international received a rapturous reception as fans hailed the great new hope. Now the back-slapping has stopped the Goat must be fed and he will score.
