Sidwell Receives International Call

Last updated : 16 August 2003 By Rob Cooper
The Royals youngster, who pumeled home an unbelieveable opener in today's game against Nottingham Forest, will join up with David Platt's squad on Sunday.

The 20-year-old featured in England's games against Slovakia and Serbia & Montenegro at the back end of last season, impressing greatly. When those wondrous displays are combined with the midfield wizardry the youngster has shown in the opening three games of the season, there was no way David Platt could fail to pick the flame-haired starlet.

The England under 21's play Croatia at Upton Park on Tuesday evening in a friendly game. Sidwell should play at least some part, and may well start.

Many top Premiership players have been included in the squad for the game. Bobby Zamora (of Spurs), Jermaine Jenas, Chelsea's £6 million aquistion Glen Johnson and Francis Jeffers are amongst those in Platt's squad.

'Sidders' has netted in each of Reading's opening three games of the season despite a less than prolific start to his Royals career last season. Despite giving away a penalty against Boston in the League Cup the youngster has been the star of the show so far this season, which is quite some feat given the displays of Scott Murray, Nicky Forster, Nicky Shorey et al.
