Scott The Scotland International?

Scott Murray, who last week signed for the Royals in a £650,000 deal, is hoping to earn a call-up to Berti Vogts' Scotland squad.

The twenty-nine-year-old already has a Scotland B cap to his name but is hoping to gain full international recognition in his native land. However, if he is to do so he will have to displace Paul Devlin, a player Reading are reportedly targeting.

Reading's new number seven has already sited improved pay and better quality football as reasons for his decision to swap Ashton Gate for the Madejski Stadium, but now he claims the chance to catch Vogts' eye was another factor that helped to convince him his future was a hundred miles down the M4.

"I hope coming to Reading helps my international chances. If I'm playing well and the team are doing well then I must be in with a chance," said the Scotsman, speaking to the Reading Evening Post.

"I definitely want to play for Scotland and I have high hopes I will – but Paul Devlin of Birmingham plays there so it is going to be very difficult."

Murray was included in the Scotland squad earlier this year but was forced to withdraw because Bristol City needed him as they pushed for LDV Vans and Division Two successes.

Andy Hughes and Graeme Murty are both also eligible to play for Scotland, but despite some wondrous performances last season are yet to receive international recognition. With former Reading boss Tommy Burns assisting Berti Vogts it is hard to imagine that they have not been noticed.

There is no doubt that if Scott Murray plays as well as Murty and Hughes then all three could be in-line for a call-up that should have arrived long ago.
