The veteran winger was not offered a new deal by Reading at the end of last season, despite making an impressive forty-three appearances for the Royals.
'Johnny Salad' was reportedly not offered a new deal because the club allegedly revoked a clause in his contract that stated that he must be offered a new deal if he played more than twenty-five games over the course of the campaign.
Although it was thought that Salako, a former England international, would have many suitors, he is currently without a club for the new season. As a gesture of goodwill, Brentford boss Martin Allen is allowing the wing man to participate in pre-season training at Griffin Park. However, he is not currently considering signing the former Reading man.
Speaking to the Brentford official site Allen explained: "I can confirm that John Salako has been invited to train with us for a few days as at present he has not signed for any club.
"It was at his request to come in and train with us until he manages to get fixed up, and I duly obliged. At this present moment, there is no chance of John signing for us. It is me doing him a favour."
Salako signed for the Royals from Charlton initially on loan in November 2001 before sealing a permanent deal. In two and a half years at the club the left-winger made 120 appearances and scored 14 goals. His best year at Reading was undoubtedly his first when he helped architect the club's promotion to the old Nationwide League Division One.
Meanwhile, Salako's former teammate Ricky Newman today signed a new contract with the Royals. The 33-year-old finally penned a fresh one-year deal after long drawn-out negotiations.
