The linesman flagged to say Reading had scored after he saw the ball cross the goal line. While the ball did cross the line it did not cross it inbetween the goal posts. A fundamental issue when deciding if a goal has been scored.
The referee went with the linesman's ruling and to the disbelief of everybody the goal stood.
The game went on to finish 2 - 2 but it will be remembered for the most bizare goal that neverwas being awarded for Reading.
The opening "goal" has been credited as a John Eustace own goal. Talk about a double slap in the face.
Smith and O'Toole scored for Watford before Stephen Hunt netted an 87th minute penalty to make the final score 2 - 2.
