The 27-year-old Real Madrid forward had been reported by these messages to have signed a three year deal with the Lancashire outfit.
Despite the obvious attractions of Burnley, a club who regularly concede five or more goals in a game, Reading MAD smelled a rat all along.
The club have today issued an apology to all the fans who received the phoney phone message.
A club statement read: "As you may have guessed this message was a hoax and one that we'd like to apologise for."
Fans who received the message were charged an incredible 25p to receive what turned out to be utter rubbish. In an attempt to save the ever-more embarrassing face of Premium TV, the company responsible for the service, the club are offering the next message they send out for nothing.
The statement concluded: "We would like to assure fans that the next SMS message they receive from Burnley FC will be free of charge."
Whilst the offer may be seen as good PR by many, it is undoubtedly a poor attempt to save the face of what can now be considered an untrustworthy service.
