"We are trying to get our fitness levels as high as possible," Williams told BBC Berkshire.
"We must make sure the recovery is right because obviously we don't want to overdo ourselves before the start of the season," he added.
Reading have their final pre-season game at Southampton on Saturday, before they start their new Championship campaign against Scunthorpe, Williams' former club.
But the 24-year-old insisted that the fixture against his former side holds no extra incentive.
"It's just another game, another job that we have to do," he said. "Hopefully, when they come down on the 7th of August, we will get three points, that's the main thing."
Southampton versus Reading kicks off at 1500 BST on Saturday, 31 July and can be heard live on BBC Radio Berkshire.
