Platt Aims For Victory

Former Arsenal star David Platt got his under 21 team off to a flying start on Friday, leading them to a 4-0 win over Slovakia u21 in the first game of their European Championship qualifying campaign.

Speaking after Friday's 4-0 victory Platt said: "It was our first group game. We've got a win, scored goals and also put in a good performance.

"Good performances and good results breed spirit and breed confidence. We can go out and build on that."

Following Friday's victory the press were raving about a fantastic performance from Joe Cole who scored one and set up two after being left out of Sven Goran Eriksson's senior squad.

However, Platt believes that the victory wasn't all down to one player.

He added: "People ask me about Joe Cole but I think we should talk about the team. Joe was with the Under 21s and performed as part of a very good under 21 performance.

"I don't think it is fair to Joe, or the other players, to single one player out.

"I was delighted with the way things went for us throughout the game. Once we got the second goal we went on from there and had full control of the game. I was pleased with the first half, we achieved what we had set out to do from the first whistle.

"They changed things at the start of the second half and gave us a few problems but we had players out there which enabled me to change the shape and counteract that very well.

"What has pleased me is everybody has taken on board what I wanted to do. Not just the first eleven, everyone involved. I thought Michael Carrick was excellent in midfield but there were good performances throughout the team."
