In the 2000-01 season Reading finished third in the league in Division Two, just behind Rotherham who pipped the Royals to the second automatic promotion spot.
After suffering disappointment in the league Reading then lost 3-2 to Walsall in the play-off final, ensuring that they stayed in the Second Division for an extra year.
Tomorrow the Royals will play the Millers for the first time since that fateful 2000-01 season, that season Reading beat Rotherham home and away.
Despite the significance of the match tomorrow Alan Pardew insists that revenge will not be on his players minds.
He told readingfc.co.uk: "Like I said about Walsall, I feel that Rotherham did us a favour by beating us to promotion as the extra year in Division Two enabled us to be much better prepared for life in the First Division.
"Tomorrow's game is not about revenge or anything like that.
"We're looking to get three points, and that's all the match is about. But Millmoor is a tough place to get a result because the pitch is tight and they've got some good players.
"They do have a ceratin style about them, but nothing we haven't seen before, and nothing that we can't handle."
Meanwhile, loan signing Matthew Upson, who turned down the chance to join Millwall on loan, has admitted that he doesn't expect to go straight into the team tomorrow, declaring: "I am not even thinking of who is playing against Rotherham on Saturday."
He added: "I will take a back seat for a while and see how people react to me, as different people react in different ways.
"I am here to train and then see how it goes. I need to play some matches, hoepfully I'll come here and do well, then that will benefit both sides."
