Having completed the signing of Marcus Hahnemann earlier in the week Alan Pardew is ready to loan out his reserve team goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown in order to gain some valuable first team experience.
Luton Town, who were earlier intersted in Hahnemann, and AFC Bournemouth are favourites to land the young 'keeper.
Ashdown has only ever played five first team games for the Royals. Last year when Phil Whitehead got injured Pards chose to bring in Hahnemann and then Roberts on loan to cover, feeling that Ashdown lacked the experience to rise to the challenge.
But despite the lack of confidence in his ability the 21-year-old is very highly rated - he spent a month training with Arsenal alongside Richard Wright aqnd David Seaman at the end of last season.
Reading boss Alan Pardew said that he is ready to let his Ashdown leave, albeit tempoarily. He told Teamtalk.com: ""Jamie will definitely go out on loan so he can gain some experience - that's one of the reasons I brought Marcus here.
"I still think Jamie has a great chance of being a top keeper, but he needs games and I'm in Catch 22. I can't have him sitting on the bench, but I can't just throw him in in the First Division, so he needs more experience.
"I will watch him do his stuff when he goes on loan and hopefully when he comes back he can take up the challenge here.
"With the transfer window looking like it will shut on August 31 I never had any choice and Marcus also was desperate to come here. He will put pressure on the number one spot in terms of giving Phil competition.
"I want competition in all areas. I think we need three goalkeepers and with Jamie Young, who is only 16, we have four. However, I don't think Young is not ready for the bench yet."
