Pardew made the decision to bring Darius into the action with just fifteen minutes of the encounter remaining and the burley striker rewarded his faith with his second goal in the last three games.

Henderson thumped home an eighty-third minute goal from twenty-five yards to put the game beyond the feisty Lions reach.

Alan Pardew, who was serving the second of a three-match touchline ban, commented: "I'm very pleased with Darius and he repaid my faith with a cracking strike. He's a young lad who's getting better by the game.

"I only gave him 15 minutes and he showed what he could do in them. I'm confident I can start putting him in for the whole 90 minutes."

Pardew was delighted with the overall display which saw the Royals rise to a season-high fourth position, cementing their place in the play-offs.

Reading played some good football and despite a period of Millwall pressure around the hour mark there was always only going to be one outcome.

"We were by far the better side we passed the ball well and looked very dangerous in possession and without playing great I felt we won fairly comfortably.

"We've now got to take this win and build on it maintaining a play-off place is in our hands.

"Millwall had a few players missing and I told the players you're not going to get a better opportunity to win here, but we still had to play to a high level, they test your character and resolve."

Reading's next game is on Tuesday, away at Sheffield United, a club they are currently level on points with.
