Twenty-nine-year-old right-back Graeme Murty has signed a new deal keeping him at the Madejski Stadium until June 2007.
The club have moved swiftly to offer the defender a new deal, even though his current deal does not expire until next summer.
Just last week midfielder Steve Sidwell also signed a new deal meaning that he will stay at the club for a further two years. Reading Football Club's decision to offer the duo new deals follows reported interest from Championship rivals West Ham United, who are of course managed by former Royals boss Alan Pardew.
Full-back Murty, who has won the club's player of the year award in two out of the last three seasons, was pleased to have signed a contract as he now does not need to worry about his future going into the new season.
"The club have shown a lot of faith in me by offering me this contract before I have even started the final year of my current deal," he said.
Many fans have questioned the clubs ambition, suggesting that the Premiership is an unliveable dream. However, Murty is convinced that the club are capable of making it into the Prem before his new three-year deal expires.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club so far, we are building an excellent side and one that I know can challenge for promotion in the next couple of years.
"The fans here are terrific and I know how much it would mean to them to see us promoted to the Premiership. I will be doing my utmost to get us there," he added.
With Graeme Murty and Steve Sidwell tied to long-term deals, hopefully the Royals will next move to secure the signature of influential forward Nicky Forster whose current contract expires next summer.
