Under-fire Millwall boss Mark McGhee has encouraged Lions supporters to get behind their team following their 2-0 defeat at home to Reading yesterday.

"I wish we'd got better support today because we were getting booed when we came off the pitch," commented McGhee.

"It's dangerous for us not to get behind all our players. The only way our young players are going to improve is if people get behind them. It's all the more difficult for me because if there is one team I don't like to lose against, it's Reading."

"As a manager you hope that you have the support behind you, but I felt today, and at Reading, that at no time did I have the crowd behind me. I can't say I enjoyed that."

The New Den based side have failed to deliver this season and currently lie twelfth, a disappointing return after an impressive fourth place finish last year. The below par displays have led to some fans getting on McGhee's back.

McGhee, the disgraced former Reading manager, admitted that he expected to pick up points against the Royals, a side who are widely perceived to be 'easy meat', despite their lofty league placing.

"We saw this game as a game in which we could pick up points. Despite the fact we battled hard we were lacking up front. Steve Claridge worked hard all afternoon but never really got a solid opening," added McGhee.

The Lions will hope to pick themselves up and restore some pride next weekend when they travel to relegation-threatened Brighton, a team who have staged something of a renaissance in recent weeks.

"We've got to pick up our game for our next match. I can't really fault the lads for the effort they put in but all in all it was a disappointing day's work for us and we'll be looking to turn it around quickly if we don't want to slip down the table."
