"I was a little bit concerned that, after Wednesday's FA Cup tie at West Brom, we wouldn't come out fired up.
"I was also a bit concerned because the players were a bit quiet in the dressing room before the game, but they were focused out there.
"At half-time we were 2-0 up and I said the next goal was really important because when you get three goals at home you should be okay.
"People may say we didn't deserve to be right down there in the table, but the fact is that we were. I thought the fans were terrific today and I am sure they will enjoy themselves tonight. I know I will.
"Now we can look forward to Aston Villa in the FA Cup next week. They are a great club with a fantastic manager and it should be a bit like the old days for us."
Owls boss Alan Irvine blamed a lack of mental strength for his side's display.
He said: "That was unacceptable. We were a bit unlucky with the first goal but after that we caved in.
"If we are mentally fragile that will be a real problem. If you don't have mental strength then you are in real trouble. The time you really find out about people is in adversity.
"I am learning things as I go along but I don't want to judge people over too short a time. I am still trying to get to know the players and I wouldn't like to jump to conclusions too soon
"This could be a huge moment in our season one way or another."
Reading got the opening goal three minutes before the interval.
Jimmy Kebe unleashed a fierce drive from the edge of the penalty area which flicked off Richard Hinds before beating Wednesday goalkeeper Lee Grant.
On the stroke of half-time, Reading added their second. A left-wing cross from Gylfi Sigurdsson was moved on by Welsh international Simon Church, giving Gregorz Rasiak the easy task of tapping it across the line.
Eight minutes into the second half, the home side stretched their lead with a superb goal from Church.
Put clear by strike partner Rasiak, he turned his defender and unleashed a ferocious drive past Grant from the edge of the area.
Midway through the second half, Rasiak added his second from close range after being set up by Kebe. The Mali international then scored the fifth himself 19 minutes from time.
