Captain Matt Mills struck the only goal at Goodison Park as the Championship side shocked the Merseysiders to claim a place in the quarter-finals for the second successive season, and it was another notable scalp for McDermott, whose side beat Liverpool en route to the last eight in 2010 as well as knocking out Premier League West Brom in this year's third round.
McDermott said: "I was as bullish as I was ever going to be. I was looking forward to the game because it is just a great place to come and play. When we saw the draw, Everton or Chelsea, I just wanted to come here because it is just such a great atmosphere.
"I felt that if we set our team up in the right manner and went about business in the right way, I knew we had players who could make a difference.
"We had a game plan to come here and do what we had to do and I felt we carried that through. It is a great night for the players. You have to be disciplined when you come here - they passed it around for the first 20 minutes and did really well.
"But we did what we had to do and I thought we were deserved winners. It is a great night for the players. "
