The scintillating attacking form of the Royals was conspicuous by its absence in the stalemate at the Ricoh Arena. But the manager was happy to have wrapped up a top-six spot ahead of the final round of matches.
McDermott said: "We've gone from 12th in the league 16 games ago into the play-off places, and what the players have done in that time is incredible. We've won 11, drawn three and lost two.
"We've just been ticking off each game and this is a remarkable achievement from where they were to where they are now.
"The last thing I wanted was to be looking over our shoulders next week so the point was enough . We'll take that. We didn't play particularly great but we know that and we got what we came here for.
"I'm not sure exactly what's changed. There is a great spirit, desire and determination. We've got good players, good staff and we've got pace and goals in the team."
