Chairman John Madejski believes that the Reading squad is better suited to First Division football because there is a greater challenge to rise to, something that they will thrive on.

Times are changing in football, clubs and players alike are becoming less money orientated as the harsh financial realities come to light. Madejski believes that players will start playing for the love of sport once more.

Speaking at a press conference confirming Marcus Hahnemann's signing, yesterday, Madejski said: "I've always said that this squad we've got will fare far better in the First Division than in the Second Division - that's the sort of players we have.

"We sit better in the First Division. The team has got to want to win badly enough - and they will get it if they have that desire.

"Football's not all about money, it's about commitment, it's all about wanting to win badly enough. You can achieve everything if you want it badly enough. The money comes, but it has to come via success. Bonuses are all about achievement - we've got to get that success."
