John Madejski insists that the signing of Bobby Convey for an undisclosed figure, believed to be in the region of £800,000, reaffirms Reading's Premiership ambitions.
Fans had lambasted the multi-millionaire ex-Auto Trader owner for adopting a similar approach to Manchester United in the transfer market - buying a fleet of Fiestas when really we needed a Ferrari.
The addition of Liam Miller, Gabriel Heinze and Alan Smith to the Old Trafford playing staff has been compared by some to the purchase of a string of Fiestas.
Given the unambitious additions Reading had made to their squad before the capture of Convey, the transfer market policy similarities were startling.
Whilst dubbing Glen Little, Paul Brooker and Ibrahima Sonko as Fiestas is a trifle unfair given that the first ball of the season is yet to be kicked, it is a little fairer to dub Bobby Convey as a Ferrari given the hyperbole that has surrounded his whirlwind arrival.
And with Convey on board Madejski is hoping that the Royals can race towards the Premiership this season.
"I think this signing underpins our determination to seek football at the highest level," said Madejski, speaking to the press as Convey was formally unveiled as a Reading player.
"I hope it (the signing of Convey) resonates throughout the Thames Valley, and urges more people to come and get involved because we're a club that's going places," he said.
Madejski comnented that he may return to the nation that brought us the Ford motor car, and more recently the Fiesta, to strengthen the Royals squad in the future.
"When you sign players from America you get an ambition, rather than a pecuniary ambition," added Madejski.
"They have a desire to become top professional players and I'm sure that's why Bobby's here, to get the experience of playing in this country which was the home of football in the beginning."
Convey is the fourth player to sign for the Royals this summer, but Reading's transfer dealing may not be over yet. Club officials revealed that they 'still have a number of irons in the fire'.
With the squad looking paper thin in places Steve Coppell will hope to further strengthen his squad in the coming weeks.
But will he be buying another Ferrari or another Fiesta?
