Mackie, who has been appointed captain of the side this season following the apparent demise of Phil Parkinson, was sporting a bandage around his head for Saturday's fixture, fitting the image of a tough-tackling, never-say-die, playing through the pain defender in the English game.
Speaking to readingfc.co.uk the 26-year-old centre-back explained: "I had three stitches put in on Tuesday, the head bandage was just to protect them. It didn't look all that great but I had to do it - and we got a clean sheet so I might do it again!"
Following the final whistle John Mackie jumped into the travelling Reading fans in celebration of the 2-0 victory over Walsall, seen by many as revenge for the 2001 Play-Off Final defeat.
The leap into the fans got the Royals captain into hot water with the stewards who were less than impressed with his 'provocative' behaviour.
"It was our second win on the bounce and I got a bit excited! There was a nic wall in front of the fans and I thought I'd have that," he explained.
"The stewards had a word - they've got to say something, of course, but I didn't realise that they were there to be honest."
