Twenty-eight-year-old goalkeeper Kelvin Jack today completed a transfer to Reading following a trial spell at the club.
The Royals have handed the Trinidad & Tobago man squad number twenty-two, although he is unlikely to feature in the first team between now and the end of the season. Jamie Ashdown is expected to start in goal on Saturday in Marcus Hahnemann's absence, whilst rookie Jamie Young should sit on the bench once more leaving no place for Jack.
Coppell chose to offer Kelvin Jack a permanent deal so that the goalkeeper can play reserve team football for the Royals. It would not have been possible for Jack to play for Reading's second string before signing a permanent deal because international clearance could not have been successfully sought.
Depending on how well Jack, an ex-Walsall trialist, performs for the reserves the Royals may offer him a new deal for next season.
Indeed, there appears to be little risk attached to the deal for the club who attained the shotstopper for nothing as his contract at previous club San Juan Jabloteh expired in January.
Director of Football Nicky Hammond, himself a top goalkeeper in his playing days, told the official site that he is looking forward to taking a closer look at the Trinidad & Tobago man.
"You need to see goalkeepers in game situations, see how they read the game and control their penalty area," he said.
"That kind of thing is very difficult to reproduce in training, so taking him until the end of the season allows us to play him in reserve team and maybe even first team games so we can make a more informed judgment at the end of the season."
Jack previously had a trial at Reading in September 2001 under then boss Alan Pardew. However, back then the Royals chose not to pursue their interest in the goalkeeper.
