Nigel Howe is often viewed by Royals fans as a killjoy who lacks ambition and doesn't want the club to invest in new players. However, in a revealing interview with Reading World he revealed that he feels the club are going places.
He said: "Playing the big guns so early in the season is the best start we could have hoped for because it really sets the tone for the rest of the season. I'm not frightened by playing the top sides of this division because I think we can do well up against them.
"The first few home games against big clubs are likely to see massive gates. If we get huge attendances right from the start of the season then hopefully we can maintain the support. There is a fantastic atmosphere at the Madejski Stadium when it is full.
"The new fencing segregation system we are having put in place for next season will ensure we can sell out every seat.
"I certainly don't feel we're going to be one of the division's also rans. We want to invest in new players but we are waiting for the outcome of the Carlton & Granada case.
"We're allowing Alan Pardew to look at players and we hope to be able to provide him with funds when this court case is over. There are several clubs who may go out of business if the court case doesn't go the league's way. We are certainly not in that position.
"We're going to be a big club. Our ambition to play in the Premiership remains!"
