The 22-year-old forward was out of contract at the end of the season so Steve Coppell, who had him on loan at Brighton earlier in the season, has decided to cash in whilst he can to fuel another transfer frenzy having already added Kitson, Morgan and Ingimarsson to his squad.
Since Coppell's arrival at the club, Henderson has been dogged by niggling knee injuries so failed to get near the first team. Furthermore, after a mediocre loan spell at Brighton alongside Leon Knight, big Darius was always going to be one of the first out of the door.
However, the ex-Ipswich target is pleased to have joined the Gills who have been on a long search for a striker having missed out on Reading's latest recruit Dave Kitson.
Henderson has signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the Kent side, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2007.
With his long-term future secured, Darius is a happy man.
He said to the Gills official site: "I am very pleased to have joined Gillingham. I'm looking forward to playing now and getting to know my new team-mates. There was limited first team options for me at Reading which was made clear by Steve Coppell. There was no doubt in my mind that I had to get away."
Injury has been the story of the Doncaster born forward's Reading career, our 2001-02 promotion winning campaign was his golden year as he found the net eleven times only to have the second half of his campaign removed by injury.
Last season Henderson found the net just three times as he was unable to break into the first team on a regular basis as Forster was consistently used as a lone frontman.
A permament move for loanee Lloyd Owusu now appears a distinct possibility as some funds from the Henderson transfer will surely be freed up so the deal can be completed.
