Coppell Looking To Strengthen Squad

On the eve of his second game in charge of the Royals, boss Steve Coppell has admitted he will need to add more strength in depth if his side are to be a success.

The 48-year-old, who won his first game in charge on Tuesday night by two goals to one, will hope for an improved performance tomorrow when his side take on Preston.

However, the Royals are suffering from a bout of injuries which could hamper the sides chances. Striker Darius Henderson, who came off during Wednesday's 4-1 reserve defeat at Brentford, is out of action with a stomach injury, leaving Coppell with just Forster and Goater at his disposal going forward.

Whilst at the back Graeme Murty is struggling with his fitness having already missed the last two games. Ricky Newman may again have to deputise. Yet things are made worse by the revelation that Steve Brown may not be fit to play. The former Charlton centre back will face a late fitness test.

Despite being relatively injury free the Royals are really down to bare bones, such is the weakness of the squad in key areas. Coppell admits that over the coming weeks and months he will have to rectify the problem.

"I think it's very important to get another couple of players in just to give the squad more density in certain positions. At the moment a couple of knocks leaves us bare and having to make three or four changes to compensate," he revealed, speaking to the official site.

But despite his eagerness to add tot he squad, Steve reckons Royals fans will have to wait to see some new names at the Madejski Stadium as most clubs aren't currently keen on letting any of their players go.

"You can't, and it's more difficult right now because Premiership clubs have rationalised their squads. They've cut numbers down, with the exception of Chelsea of course.

"Right now it's not a question of Premiership clubs having four or five players to loan out. The players they wanted to loan out have already gone and then they're very much down to their bare bones. The transfer window isn't open until January and not many Premiership clubs are looking to move players on. "

Since Coppell's arrival, the papers have been indicating that the new Reading boss is keen on bringing Danny Cullip and Leon Knight to the club from Brighton.
