Brighton & Hove Albion chairman Dick Knight is this afternoon pulling out all the stops in order to prevent Seagulls boss Steve Coppell flying North this autumn.
The 48-year-old is expected to walk out on the Seagulls in the same way that Alan Pardew did two weeks ago at Reading.
Brighton, relegated from Division One at the end of last season, are currently perched in second place in the Second Division. But a move to the Royals, who will still be hoping to challenge for promotion to the Premiership this season, must appeal to Coppell.
Initial discussions between Coppell and the Royals took place yesterday, however it seems unlikely that there will be any more announcements today as Chief Executive Nigel Howe confirmed that "there is no chance the appointment will be made today".
But there could yet be a sting in the tail as Brighton & Hove Albion are still hoping to cling onto their man. Chairman Dick Knight will this afternoon hold discussions with Coppell in an attempt to keep him at the Withdean Stadium.
"I put a number of issues to him why he should stay. He is mulling this over together with the offer he has received at Reading," explained the Seagulls chairman.
"Certainly Reading are after our manager and I'm doing my level best to persuade him to stay at Brighton. Reading requested permission to speak to Steve and he went for an interview yesterday. My understanding is that he is the man they want."
The Reading manager's position looks as good as Coppell's, as the other chief candidate, Glenn Hoddle appears uninterested in the job. The former England bosses agent, Dennis Roach, denied that Hoddle has been in discussions with the Royals.
Speaking to BBC Sport Online the agent revealed: "There have not been any negotiations with Reading and there will not be any".
Assistant manager Kevin Dillon has performed the role of acting manager over the course of the past two weeks, however, he will not be handed the role on a permanent basis. A record of one win and four defeats in his five league games in charge was always going to put paid to his chances of landing the job he craves.
Tony Adams, Iain Dowie, Reading MAD Editor Rob Cooper, Steve Cotterill, Glenn Hoddle, Lawrie Sanchez and Bryan Robson have all had their names mentioned in connection with the Royals job in the past couple of weeks but it is more than likely that Coppell will tomorrow be appointed as Reading boss.
A £100,000 compensation deal should smooth over any cracks in the Reading- Brighton relationship.
