Coppell and Keane ahead of Black Cats v Royals

Steve Coppell hoping to get back on track after a couple of poor defeats.

"Letting in six goals in two games is a concern and something we hadn't expected to come onto our agenda.

"One 3-0 was bad enough and I gave the players the benefit of the doubt but in the last game we were well beaten.

"If we had beaten West Ham it would have been a great start given the fixtures we had been given but we didn't.

"I don't know which way to take it at the moment. Can we get back on track? I don't know."

Coppell is hoping that Nicky Shorey is back to his best. The full back has been below his best lately with his concentrations elsewhere like England duty and the proposed move to West Ham that didn't materialise.

"He would prefer to be plying his trade at a higher level," said Coppell. " That's his long-term goal and he is, on a monthly basis, being excited by the challenge of playing for England.

"Now we have got to get him excited by the challenge of playing for Reading again.

"We need him to be right at the top of his game and there are quite a few players who have yet to reach the levels they were performing at last year."

Roy Keane is another manager hoping his team can pick themselves up after a couple of defeats.

"We've had a couple of weeks off with the international break and now everyone just wants to get back and get on with it.

"I'm looking forward to the Reading game and although it's not ideal for us in terms of injuries, it's still a game we'll be looking to win.

"I've said at the beginning of the season that our home form would be very important and I've been satisfied so far with the start we've made in that department.

"We beat Tottenham Hotspur on the first day of the season and we made it hard for Liverpool to get past us in our last game.

"It's vital that we continue that against Reading tomorrow because if you want to do anything in this division then you've got to be strong at home and look to win your home games.

"I'm sure the lads will be raring to go and with the usual big crowd behind them there's no reason why we can't go out there and get a good result."
