Welsh international Adie Williams is on his way out at the Madejski Stadium, it has sensationally emerged.

The 34-year-old, who has spent thirteen years with Reading Football Club, could be lining up for a different club in unfamiliar colours within weeks.

With Williams' contract due to expire next summer, and the club reluctant to offer him a new deal, boss Steve Coppell has agreed to allow the captain to leave on a free transfer now.

Veteran Williams is understood not to want his contract to run out as he may struggle to find a new club.

Speaking to Reading World, Coppell sensationally confirmed that the veteran centre-back could soon be on his way out.

"We have mutually decided Adie's name should be circulated to other clubs. If somebody comes in for him and makes a better offer than we have he would be allowed to go.

"I explained the Club's point of view to Adie and that no contracts would be offered until substantially later on in the season, but Adie as a senior pro feels that that is a situation he can't see continuing," said Coppell.

Although several Coca-Cola league sides are likely to be interested in snapping up the former Wolves defender, Coppell has admitted that Williams will continue to be considered for first team selection.

"As far as I'm concerned he's contracted here until the end of the season and while he's performing the way he has been, which is top quality.

"He will be playing for me. I hope this doesn't cloud his mind too much, I don't think it will because he's a top pro," added the Royals boss.

With Williams on his way out, Coppell is expected to swoop to sign a replacement centre-back as Ivar Ingimarsson and the shaky Ibrahima Sonki are the only other two senior central defenders that Reading have on their books.

But Coppell has ruled out making a move for Leicester's out-of-favour transfer listed former Arsenal defender Martin Keown.
