Butler, who was this summer stripped of the Reading number nine shirt, will have his favourite number on his back once more. Rotherham boss Ronnie Moore, who was desperate to sign another striker, has given the Dudley-born forward the highly-coveted squad number.
But Butler, who hasn't played regular first team football for two years now, was just delighted to sign for a club that could offer him regular action.
"I am delighted to be at Rotherham where I will get the chance to play first team football. That wasn't on the cards at Reading where I had had a little fall out with the manager," he said speaking to the Rotherham official site.
"I know there's a great team spirit at Rotherham and I just hope I can soon start scoring goals for my new club."
However, the Millers didn't complete the transfer with time to register him for their game against Wigan today, so Butts will watch the game from the stands. He must wait until the South Yorkshire side travel to Sunderland next weekend to make his Rotherham bow.
The Millers, who played out a 0-0 bore draw with the Royals on Monday, were desperate to sign a new striker following the departure of highly-rated frontman Alan Lee. The Irishman signed for Cardiff for £850,000, giving the Millmoor side ample cash to splash on Butler and possible future new recruits.
Reading meanwhile now face a mini striking crisis with just three senior forwards at the club. However, the situation will be eased on Monday morning when Darius Henderson returns to Reading at the end of a one-month loan tenure with Brighton.
Despite the troubles that could now face his side, Alan Pardew will feel pleased to have got a £150,000 fee for Butts who would have gone for nothing at the end of the season.
Martin Butler joined Reading in an £850,000 deal from Cambridge United in February 2000 and instantly became a fan favourite at the club. In his first full year at the club his deadly combination with Jamie Cureton fired the Royals to the Play-Off Final.
Despite an extra-time goal against Walsall, Butler just couldn't do enough to force the Royals into the First Division.
The following season, Reading's promotion winning campaign, was a major disappointment for the frontman. The reigning Fans Player of the Year endured a difficult start to the campaign and then broke his leg in October, keeping him out for the majority of the rest of the campaign.
Lacking confidence the former Walsall man barely featured in the first team last season despite consistently finding the net for the reserves. The gradual tailing off of his Reading career culminated in his unsurprising sale.
