Boss hails stubborn Cobblers

Reading boss Brian McDermott paid tribute to Northampton's resilience after they beat his side 4-2 on penalties in the Carling Cup second round. Royals skipper Matt Mills bagged a brace either side of a Hal Robson-Kanu strike, but his own goal in extra-time stoppage-time saw Northampton equalise for a third time after goals from Andy Holt and Kevin Thornton during normal time. Cobblers goalkeeper Oscar Jansson saved the opening spot-kick from Simon Church and Jake Taylor blazed wide for the Royals, meaning successful efforts from Steve Guinan, Kevin Thornton, Michael Jacobs and Abdul Osman sent the League Two side through in the shootout. McDermott said: "I picked a team I thought would win the game. We got in front three times and you should win if you score three goals at home. "Credit to Northampton, though. Michael Jacobs looks like he is a good talent. I am so disappointed for our supporters. We should have gone through. "I am generally disappointed that we didn't get through that round."
